St. John’s junior wing averaged 29.0 points, 5.0 steals and 4.0 assists during 2-0 stretch for the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. – For the first time this season, Julian Champagnie has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week. The conference announced the honor on Monday after the 2021 First Team All-BIG EAST Selection averaged 29.0 points, 5.0 steals, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists during a 2-0 week for the Red Storm.
Champagnie shot 48.8 percent from the floor and went a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe, as the Red Storm (15-11, 7-8 BIG EAST) moved into a tie for sixth place in the league standings with four regular season games remaining.
Champagnie, who leads the league in scoring at 19.2 points per game, began the week by scoring 27 points on 9-of-19 shooting in an 86-73 road win at Xavier, who had been ranked inside the AP Top 25 as recently as the previous week. The win marked the first for St. John's in Cincinnati in more than seven years, snapping a six-game losing streak at Cintas Center. The junior made all seven of his tries from the charity stripe, matched a career-high with five assists and recorded three steals in the Quad One win.
Two days later, Champagnie paced the Johnnies in a 91-57 win over Butler, as the Red Storm completed the regular season sweep of the Bulldogs and matched its largest-ever margin of victory in a BIG EAST game. The Brooklyn native netted 31 points on 11-of-22 shooting, including a 4-for-9 showing from deep. In addition to scoring 30-plus points for the third time this season, Champagnie also pulled down seven boards and registered a career-high seven steals. Only two players in St. John's history have ever recorded more than seven thefts in a single contest, Marcus Hatten and Bernard Rencher.
Champagnie was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week twice last season and was selected to the five-player weekly honor roll five times on his way to a spot on the all-conference team. He had been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll six times this season before capturing the league's top weekly individual honor on Monday morning.
St. John's, who has risen to no. 67 in the NET, will return to action on Wednesday at Carnesecca Arena when the Red Storm takes on Creighton. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. on FS1. Limited tickets are available for purchase by clicking here or calling 1-888-GO-STORM.
