Men’s soccer standout will receive a $2,000 scholarship toward graduate study
QUEENS, N.Y. – The BIG EAST has named graduate student Brandon Knapp as the St. John's Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced this morning by the conference office.
Â
Knapp, a three-time All-BIG EAST selection, will receive a $2,000 scholarship to be used toward his graduate studies.
Â
This past season, Knapp earned First Team All-BIG EAST honors and Third Team All-Region accolades from United Soccer Coaches after starting all 20 matches for a Red Storm squad that won 11 games and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He led the team in scoring with five goals and tallied a team-high six assists, the latter of which ranked second in the league. In addition to netting four game-winning goals, Knapp also played a key role in the Red Storm's stalwart defensive unit, which led the nation in shutout percentage (0.60) and finished fifth in goals against average (0.63).
Â
The Archbishop Curley graduate earned Third Team All-BIG EAST honors in both 2019 and 2020-21. As a sophomore in 2019, Knapp played all but eight minutes for a St. John's squad that reached the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 for the first time since 2008. He scored four goals, good enough for the third-highest total on the team.Â
Â
In the classroom, Knapp tallied a 3.66 GPA as a senior and finished his undergraduate career with a 3.77 cumulative mark.Â
Â
Knapp and the Red Storm will kick off the fall campaign on Aug. 25 at Monmouth. The Johnnies' home opener will be held on Aug. 29 at Belson Stadium against FIU.
