QUEENS, N.Y. – Red Storm Tip-Off kicked off the 2024-25 basketball season in style on Friday night as the St. John's men's and women's basketball teams were introduced capped off by a performance from Quavo.
The evening featured various student contests and performances from the Red Storm cheer and dance squads before all 27 basketball student-athletes were introduced to the roaring crowd. Each team showed off their talents with skills competitions to the delight of the Carnesecca Arena faithful.
Women's Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella addressed the crowd encouraging students and fans to come to Carnesecca Arena as the women's program celebrates its 50th anniversary season.
"One of my favorite nights of the year," said Tartamella. "I'm a kid from Long Island. I take extreme pride in representing St John's and New York the right way, and they're going to do it, and so are these guys. So I'm extremely excited. Can't wait to get started."
He was followed by Naismith Hall of Famer and men's basketball Head Coach Rick Pitino, who brought excitement for the season after last night's exhibition win at No. 25 Rutgers, 91-85.
"Welcome to another Tip-off of basketball season, last night, we beat Rutgers by scoring 91 points in the game," Pitino said. "We're looking forward to the exciting season. We have a lot to learn. Great group of guys, hope you're behind us for a special run this year."
The night concluded with an electrifying performance from Quavo, who rocked Carnesecca Arena for over 45 minutes playing hit songs from his world-renowned group Migos and more.
The Red Storm women's basketball team will host an exhibition game on Monday against Pace before kicking off the regular season on Nov. 4 against Saint Peter's at 2 p.m.
The men's basketball team will host a charity exhibition on oct. 26 when welcomes Towson at 12 p.m. before starting off the 2024-25 campaign on Nov. 4 when it hosts Fordham at 6:30 p.m.
