St. John’s Routs Pace in Exhibition Contest, 80-48

12 players score and Lashae Dwyer explodes for game-high 22 points
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team dominated Pace in an exhibition contest at Carnesecca Arena on Monday night, 80-48.
The Red Storm went on a 11-0 run in the opening quarter and never looked back as it cruised to a victory as it prepares for the 2024-25 regular season. All available players recorded minutes and 12 of them entered the scoring column in the convincing win.
Lashae Dwyer shined in her first time in a St. John's uniform exploding for 22 points to lead all scorers. The Miami transfer shot 9-for-17 from the floor pulled down five rebounds and recorded three steals.
Tara Daye stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, game-high seven boards and three steals. The junior shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor against the Setters.
Ariana Vanderhoop and Skye Owen were the other two Johnnies to finish in double-figures both coming off the bench. Vanderhoop went for 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and Owen logged 10 points to fuel a reserve unit that tallied 36 points off the bench.
The Red Storm defense held Pace to 33.3 percent (18-54) shooting from the floor and 28.6 percent (6-21) from 3-point land and created 21 points off takeaways. .
Kylie Lavelle started off her career in a St. John's uniform by backing down a defender for a turnaround lay-in to open the scoring. After the two sides traded baskets and the Setters held an early lead, 8-7. The Red Storm took control rattling off a 13-3 stretch to end quarter. Dwyer made a flashy drive to the tin before forcing a steal and finishing on the other end. Vanderhoop cashed in a triple off a feed from Owen to tally 11-straight points. The Red Storm held an 11-point advantage, 20-9, after the first 10 minutes.
In the second stanza, Daye continued to expand the advantage recording a swipe to an easy finish on the other end. Owen picked up a steal and pulled up on the jump stop, swishing a mid-range. The junior completed a solo 5-0 spurt after draining a 3-pointer off an assist from Ber'Nyah Mayo, 29-13. Vanderhoop splashed her second 3-pointer in as many attempts to balloon the lead. Dwyer weaved her way around the elbow before nailing a pull-up jumper as the horn sounded to take a 38-17 cushion into the locker room.
The Red Storm continued to control the tempo as Mayo got out on the break for an and one with 8:00 to play in the third. Dwyer kept making plays as the Toronto native sunk a step-back triple before cashing in on a steal in just a 0:37 span. Freshman A'riel Littleput down a floater to cap off the Johnnies' largest run of the game, 13-0, holding Pace scoreless for 4:08 and expanding the lead to 57-21.
St. John's rolled into the final quarter with a 32-point advantage and kept firing on all cylinders offensively. Daye knocked down a corner three off a dish from Jailah Donald. Dwyer put home her second triple of the night to reach the 20-point mark and concluded her scoring with a driving lay-up to give the Red Storm its largest lead of the night, 74-37, with 3:50 to go. Vanderhoop and Owen put points on the board in the final minutes to reach double-figures as St. John's coasted to an exhibition win.
