St. John’s Receives Commitment from ASUN Freshman of the Year Sa’Mya Wyatt

The All-ASUN Third Team selection averaged 12.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game at Austin Peay
QUEENS, N.Y. – The 2024-25 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year Sa'Mya Wyatt has committed to St. John's, the program announced on Sunday.
Wyatt was a standout during her freshman year at Austin Peay averaging 12.8 points per game on 56.4 percent shooting and 5.6 rebounds per contest. In addition to being named the league's rookie of the year, the forward was tabbed an All-ASUN Third Team honoree the only freshman to earn all-conference honors.
"Sa'Mya has all the attributes we value in our program. Her drive, work ethic and toughness were the main reasons for immediate success as a young player earning freshman of the year in the Atlantic Sun," said Head Coach Joe Tartamella. "She's a weapon on both end of the floor and I can't wait to build upon her success last year. Can't wait to get her on campus."
Wyatt started in all 31 contests for the Governors averaging 31.8 minutes per game while leading the team in scoring. An efficient shooter, the forward shotn56.4 percent from the floor, which ranked 23rd in NCAA Division I and second amongst freshman trailing only National Freshman of the Year Sarah Strong of UConn. Wyatt's field goal mark ranks third-highest by an Austin Peay freshman in program history and led the ASUN Conference.
The 5-foot-11 forward emerged as a high-level scorer from the moment she stepped into the college ranks finishing in double-figures in 21 appearances. In just her third college game, she exploded for a season-high 26 points on 11-of-15 (73.3%) shooting from the floor at Indiana State on Nov. 15, 2024. The rookie finished the 2024-25 campaign with four 20-plus point performances.
In addition to her scoring prowess, Wyatt ranked second on the team and top-20 in the conference in rebounding logging 5.6 boards per game. She recorded a pair of double-doubles including one during a season-best 13-rebound performance in the regular season finale against Bellarmine on March 1.
Hailing from Powder Springs in the Atlanta area, Wyatt won back-to-back state championships at St. Francis High School in 2023-24. A four-year varsity player she averaged 16.0 points and 6.0 rebounds throughout her career. She amassed 1,554 career points and shot 71.0 percent from the field during her junior season in 2022-23.
Wyatt becomes the fourth transfer to commit to the Red Storm this off-season joining Daniela Abies (Miami), Shaulana Wagner(Troy) and Brooke Moore (Liberty).
