SJU Athletics to be Honored at National Convention

JAMAICA, N.Y. The St. Johns University Department of Athletics will be the recipient of an award for Community Service and Degree Completion at the National Consortium for Academics and Sports, which is being held at the Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida this week.

SJU Associate Athletic Director Mary Pat Beirne, who directs the Universitys LifeSkills Program, will receive the award for the department.

Its an honor to receive this award, Beirne said from Florida. We take a lot of pride in the work our student-athletes do on campus and in the community.

I am so proud that St. Johns has won recognition for both degree completion and community service, NCAS director Richard Lapchick said. When I helped found the NCAS degree completion program in 1985, I modeled it on St. Johns own program, so it should be no surprise that they are winners in this category.
