The leagues coaches made the selections and they were not permitted to vote for their own players. Hatten was one of seven players named to the first team as a result of ties in the voting.
He was joined on the first team by Boston College junior guard Troy Bell; Connecticut sophomore Caron Butler; Georgetown sophomore Mike Sweetney; Notre Dame senior Ryan Humphrey; Pittsburgh junior guard Brandin Knight and Syracuse senior Preston Shumpert.
"I share this honor with my coaches and teammates, Hatten said. My first year has been a wonderful experience at St. John's. Now I know why everybody say, 'I love New York.'"
Hatten, who was a first-team All-District 2 selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and a College Hoops Insider All-Junior College Transfer selection, led the Red Storm in scoring with 19.8 points per game, the highest scoring average by a St. Johns player since Zendon Hamilton averaged 20.8 points per game during the 1995-96 season.
The transfer averaged 22.3 points per game in conference play, leading the league, and is the first newcomer in the history of the conference to win the scoring title.
Hatten led the Red Storm with 4.69 assists per game, was second on the team in rebounding (5.3 rpg) and led the team, while ranking second in the BIG EAST, with 3.3 steals per game.
He broke the school record for steals late in the season, and enters the BIG EAST Tournament with 97 overall. Early in the season, he set a Great Alaska Shootout record with eight steals in a game against Tennessee, and set a Shootout record with 16 steals during the three-game tournament.
In an 85-83 overtime win over Connecticut on February 9, Hatten set a school and BIG EAST record, connecting on 21 free throws during the Red Storms win.
He is the first St. Johns player to earn first-team honors since Erick Barkley was named to the first team following the 1999-2000 season. Hatten is the 13th St. Johns player to earn first-team honors since the BIG EAST started. SJU players have been named to the first team 17 times, with Chris Mullin taking first team honors three times, and Mark Jackson and Malik Sealy each being named twice.
