In their first meeting in school history, the Red Storm controlled the ball in the first half despite the Blue Devils continued attack of the net. CCSU's Jessica McCavanagh began scoring at 28:41 with a shot past Red Storm goalkeeper Tracey Rollings (Paignton, Devon, England) in the upper left side of the net. Just five minutes later, CCSU's Jen Frisch scored their second goal of the day to take a 2-0 against St. John's at 32:33.
The Red Storm's Erin Henderson (Watervliet, N.Y.) answered back less than one minute later to score her second goal of the season at 33:25 from Erin Bohn (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Erinn Flaherty (Clifton Park, N.Y.) make the score 2-1 at the end of the first half.
St. John's began the second half totally dominating the ball. Sophomore Mallory DiMaio (Orefield, Pa.) set up Zambelli for a one on one with CCSU's goalkeeper Sabrina Mariani to score her first goal of the year at 56:02.
Freshman Natasha Lee (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) made several late game attacks on goal to maintain control of the ball for the Red Storm. Schmidt stole the ball from a CCSU defender and made a fast break down the field to feed an open Zambelli for an easy goal to take the lead 3-2 at 62:52 and the would-be game winner.
The Red Storm return to action next weekend in post-season play at the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals.
