Queens, NY - St. John's University men's basketball's Jermaine Maybank (Independence C.C./Bronx, NY) tore the patella tendon in his left knee and will be lost for the upcoming 2004-05 season.
First year coach Norm Roberts had praised Maybank (6-5 guard-forward) as one of the bright spots in early preseason practices. The Bronx native injured himself during the teams Red-White Scrimmage at Alumni Hall last night.
Maybank will have surgery on Wednesday, November 10th at Glen Cove Hospital in Glen Cove, New York, performed by team physician Ann Kelly, M.D.
"It is very disheartening to see Jermaine go down with this season-ending injury," Roberts said. "He is a tough competitor and we will help him get through this. The frustrating thing is he was looking so forward to this year and contributing right away."
He came to St. John's after a successful junior college career at Independence Community College in Kansas where he averaged 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists in leading the Pirates to a 20-13 record a year ago.
