St. John's Fencing Eighth After First Day at NCAAs

Jamaica, N.Y. -- The St. John's men's and women's fencing team stand in eighth place after the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships.
The four-day championship, which combines men's and women's scores, began today at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. The women's competition will be held over the first two days, with the men to follow.
The Red Storm women tallied 25 points, winning 13 bouts in the sabre and 12 in the foil to place eighth after the first day. Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State are the top three teams, followed by Penn, Columbia, Northwestern and Princeton.
Junior Christina Crane (Madison, Ga.) stands in sixth place, winning nine bouts, while classmate Julia Gelman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was 20th with four victories.
Freshman Amy Delahanty (Louisville, Ky.) won six bouts and is 14th in the foil competition, while sophomore Erzsebet Garay (Budapest, Hungary) stood in 16th place.
Competition begins again on Friday.
