QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's head men's basketball coach Norm Roberts completed his coaching staff today by hiring former Central Connecticut State University assistant coach Chris Casey.
"Chris gives us stability as our new Director of Basketball Operations," Roberts said. "He has that coaching mentality that will be a plus as he handles all aspects of the basketball program for us."
Casey served as an assistant at CCSU for three seasons. He was named an AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2003.
During his tenure with the Blue Devils, the team won the 2002 Northeast Conference championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament that same year. He was responsible for player development, game preparation and on the floor coaching while at Central Connecticut.
Casey is no stranger to the NCAA Tournament, earning berths as an assistant coach at St. Peter's College (N.Y.) in 1991 and 1995, as well.
A native of Brooklyn, Casey graduated from Western Connecticut in 1986 where he played four seasons of basketball and was a two-time captain. He cut his teeth as a head coach at Rutgers University-Newark (1998-2001), winning New Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2001.
Casey joins a staff of New York products in Fred Quartelbaum, Glenn Braica and Jose "Chuckie" Martin, all beginning their first year under Roberts.
He and his wife Hope have two children, Lauren (4) and Jordan (2 ?).
