Quartlebaum, Martin Named Assistant Coaches by Roberts

QUEENS, N.Y. -- St. John's University head men's basketball coach Norm Roberts announced the hiring of two assistant coaches to his staff, it was announced today.
The Red Storm head coach has added Fred Quartlebaum and Jose (Chuck) Martin to his staff. They join, Glenn Braica, who was named an assistant late last month.
"I'm extremely excited to have both Fred and Chuck on my staff," Roberts said. "Both guys have had extensive experience coaching and recruiting at the highest levels of college basketball. I think they're going to be great for our program and for our student-athletes."

One of the nation's top assistant coaches, Quartlebaum comes to St. John's after one season at Iowa State, where he helped the Cyclones to a 20-13 record and to the 2004 NIT Semifinals. Prior to the season at Iowa State, Quartlebaum, who in considered one of the top recruiters in the country, had spent three years as an assistant at North Carolina, and one at Notre Dame.
In his coaching career, he has helped recruit five McDonald's All-Americans (Sean May, Rashad McCants, Raymond Felton, Jawad Williams and Chris Thomas) and had a pair of recruiting classes that were ranked second nationally (2001 & 2002) while at North Carolina. Quartlebaum's first recruiting class at Iowa State was ranked eighth nationally by Clark Francis' HoopScoop. Mike Sullivan of Rivals Hoops ranked him among the top 10 best assistant recruiters in the nation. Basketball News rated him as a "Hot assistant ready to make the move to head coach" in 2003.
Quartlebaum was an assistant coach at Fairfield in 1998-99, at Holy Cross in 1997-98 and at Towson in 1996-97. Prior to his Towson stint, he served four seasons (1992-96) as an assistant coach at the United States Naval Academy. He helped the Midshipmen earn the Patriot League championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1994.
A native of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., Quartlebaum played college basketball at Fordham, earning his bachelor's degree in 1989 in communications. He was a four-year letterwinner, and helped lead the Rams to an NIT appearance in 1988.

Martin comes to St. John's after three years as an assistant coach at Drexel University in Philadelphia. He was involved with all aspects of the Dragons' basketball program, including national recruiting. Prior to his stint at Drexel, Martin spent time as an assistant at the University of Massachusetts and at Manhattan College.
Before he started his career in college coaching, Martin worked at the sports management group "Hoop Group," and as the director for the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp. Martin recruited some of the top student-athletes in the nation to attend Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp. Some of the players who attended the camp included current 76er Samuel Dalembert, Majestic Mapp (Virginia) and Greg Morton (Seton Hall).
The Bronx, N.Y., native served as an assistant coach at national-power St. Raymond's High School. He coached current Miami Heat center Ernest Brown, UMass standout Kitwana Rhymer and Mapp. Martin, who played at St. Raymond's for three years, was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1998. He also served as an assistant at Manhattan's La Salle Academy from 1993-95, where he worked current NBA All-Star, and former Red Storm standout, Ron Artest.
Martin attended Champlain (Vt.) Junior College where he captained a pair of NJCAA tournament teams, before completing his career at Monmouth University. At Monmouth, Martin played the point guard position and averaged 7.1 points and 2.0 assists over his career. Martin is a 1993 graduate of Monmouth with a degree in communications
