QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's sophomore guard Eugene Lawrence was named to the Metropolitan Basketball Writer's Association (MBWA) honor roll after lifting the Red Storm to the 2005 Panasonic Holiday Festival title.
Lawrence captured Holiday Festival MVP honors, leading the Red Storm on both ends of the floor. Lawrence averaged 10.5 points per game on 66.7 percent shooting (8-for-12) and hit at a 50 percent rate from long range (3-for-6). He also contributed 6.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds per contest, and made five steals.
The Brooklyn native has scored in double-figures in four of the last six games, averaging 10.5 ppg on 46.9 percent shooting from the field, to go along with 5.2 assists and 3.8 rebounds. Lawrence is St. John's second-leading rebounder at 4.7 boards per game on the season, and his 4.9 assists per contest are good enough for sixth in the BIG EAST.
Lawrence and the Red Storm look for their first BIG EAST win of the season and a victory on the road as well as St. John's squares off with Seton Hall on Wednesday. Tip-off from Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on the Madison Square Garden network.
