- St. John's fell to Illinois State, 78-65, in the second all-time meeting between the two schools and the first on the Red Storm's home floor. The matchup was also just the third for St. John's against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent in the last 35 seasons.
- Sophomore forward Anthony Mason Jr. and senior guard Daryll Hill led the Red Storm with 12 points, and senior forward Lamont Hamilton just missed his second straight double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
- For Mason, the 12-point effort was his third straight double-digit scoring output marked the second time in the last three games that he led the team in scoring. Hill got into double figures for the second straight game and moved into 27th place on the St. John's career scoring list with 1,198 career points.
- Sophomore big man Tomas Jasiulionis went a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor and set a new career-high with six points in the contest. Jasiulionis was active on the inside, grabbing three rebounds (two offensive) and blocking his first two shots of the season.
- Hamilton, who entered the night tied for 10th in the BIG EAST in blocked shots, swatted two Redbird shot attempts to bring his season blocks total to eight in five games (1.6 bpg).
- Led by 12 points from Hill and a career-high six from freshman Qa'rraan Calhoun, the Red Storm bench outscored the Redbird reserves 14-0 in the second half and 27-13 for the contest.
- After committing 19 turnovers that led to 24 Illinois State points in the first half, St. John's committed just three turnovers that led to four Illinois State points in the second half.
- The Red Storm used a 9-1 run to get to within four points (62-58) with 7:20 remaining in the contest, but the Redbirds responded with a 10-0 run to open up a 76-61 lead to effectively put the game away with just over a minute remaining.
- Hill recorded two steals for the fourth time in five games this season to bring his career total to 117, 17 shy of 10th place on the St. John's career list.
