St. John's Softball Wins A Pair At Adidas Golden Panther Invitational

MIAMI, FLA. - The Red Storm evened its record to 2-2 at the Adidas Golden Panther Invitational. The day included a win over Buffalo, an extra inning victory over host school Florida International, an 11 strikeout performance by sophomore pitcher Lisa Geer and Danielle Estrada's first career home run.
St. John's took on Florida International in a 7 p.m. nightcap. For the fourth consecutive game, the Red Storm took the lead in the first inning. This time around, Estrada scored junior Tami Hill on a triple to left field. In the top of the fifth, Estrada hit her first career home run, over the fence in left center field, making the score 4-0.
Florida International rallied in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score 4-4. With senior Megan Oliver on second base and Jessica Foley on first, Roxann Struble entered the game to pinch hit. She came up big with a two RBI single to center field, making it a 6-4 game.
Geer sealed the win in the eighth, closing out a solid outing in the circle. She fanned 11 over eighth innings and shut out the offense through six. Geer battled through the seventh and eighth to earn a complete game victory over FIU, 6-5. The win was her first of the season.
Earlier in the day, the Red Storm got the opportunity for pay back against the University at Buffalo and took an 11-6 victory. St. John's scored 11 runs on 11 hits en route to its first win at the Adidas Golden Panther Invitational.
Team work was the theme as eight members of the Red Storm's starting lineup scored or drove in at least one run. A four-run fourth inning put St. John's ahead for good and Senior Jo Sherlock, juniors Hill and Loren Anguiano and freshman Ashley Basilicato each had a double. Hill was walked a game high three times while Oliver and sophomore Bionka King had two RBI a piece.
Foley pitched a complete game, striking out five. The victory gave Foley her second win of the season.
The Red Storm is seeded fourth going into the final day of the tournament and will take on Florida International at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26. The bracket for the day is as follows:
St. John's (4) vs. FIU (5), 9 a.m. Notre Dame (1) vs. Winner of St. John's vs. FIU, 11 a.m. Memphis (2) vs. Buffalo (3), 1 p.m. Championship Game, 3 p.m.
