Postgame Notes: St. John's 64, Syracuse 60

- Today's meeting was the 79th in an all-time series that dates back to the 1912 season. St. John's snapped a six-game losing streak and improved to 37-42 in the series.
- After Syracuse took a 58-57 lead, Avery Patterson converted a four-point play and scored seven straight points to give the Red Storm a 64-58 advantage. Patterson was held scoreless until a fast break dunk with 16:09 remaining and finished the game with nine points on 3-of-9 shooting.
- St. John's raced out to a 13-2 lead in the opening minutes of the first half behind eight quick points from sophomore forward Anthony Mason Jr. Mason scored the Red Storm's first eight points and finished the contest with 16 points, 10 rebounds and his third double-double effort of the season.
- Freshman forward Qa'rraan Calhoun continued his strong play, tying a career-high with 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds in 26 minutes. Over his last six games, the rookie has averaged 6.0 ppg, 3.3 rpg and 48.1 percent field goal shooting (13-of-27).
- Led by Mason's 16, four St. John's players scored in double figures, as Calhoun, Lamont Hamilton and Eugene Lawrence all netted 10 points. Hamilton grabbed a game-high tying 12 boards for his team-leading fourth double-double of the year.
- Lawrence had the hot hand from 3-point range for the second straight game, knocking down 2-of-3 attempts and improving to 6-of-7 from downtown in his last two. The junior captain had a solid 10 points and seven assists in the game, including
- St. John's grabbed a season-high 44 rebounds and held an advantage on the glass over its third straight BIG EAST opponent at Madison Square Garden. The Red Storm's last two home opponents, Connecticut and Syracuse, entered the day as the top two rebounding teams in the league.
- Senior Daryll Hill (knee) and sophomore Ricky Torres (ankle) missed the Sunday contest due to injury.
- Freshman Larry Wright played 16 minutes off the bench and posted six points, four rebounds and a career-high four steals. Wright also connected from 3-point range, giving him 11 games with at least one 3 this season.
