QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's assistant basketball coach Fred Quartlebaum is one of 20 men's and women's assistants currently participating in the Black Coaches Association's (BCA) "Achieving Coaching Excellence" (ACE) program this week in Indianapolis, Ind. The three-day ACE workshop comes at the tail end of the BCA's 2009 National Convention and Expo, which was held last week in the organization's home city.
The ACE program is administered by the BCA and supported by the NCAA. The program is designed to enhance an already talented group of ethnic minority collegiate basketball coaches to become the next generation of head basketball coaches. The ACE program is committed to developing well-rounded coaches in the areas of leadership, communications, campus and community relations, media training and program management. The ACE program for men's and women's basketball coaches encompasses a faculty of well known basketball coaches, athletics and sports leaders as well as those involved in higher education.
At the conclusion of the 2008 ACE workshop, 70 coaches had completed the program. From that list of participants, 19 of the 70 have gone on to attain head coaching positions.
As part of the ACE program, Red Storm head coach Norm Roberts joined Oklahoma City Thunder assistant Ron Adams and University of Delaware head coach Monte Ross as on-court presenters.
One of the top assistant coaches in the nation with a reputation as one of the country's best recruiters, Quartlebaum is one of six members of Roberts' staff with ties to the City of New York. The energetic assistant joined the St. John's basketball family in May 2004. He is involved in all areas of the basketball program, including opponent scouting, practice and game preparation, and the development of all Red Storm basketball student-athletes. Quartlebaum has been a particularly strong mentor for the St. John's post players, helping the Red Storm frontcourt become one of the BIG EAST's more formidable units. St. John's finished with a +3.3 rebounds per game margin in 2008-09, good enough for sixth in the BIG EAST, and was eighth in the league with an average of 3.6 blocked shots per contest.
Quartlebaum helped recruit a four-man class of newcomers that will be added to the 13 letterwinners returning to the court for the Red Storm in 2009-10, comprising Roberts' most experienced squad as he heads into his sixth season on the STJ bench. The 2009-10 Red Storm boasts six returnees with significant starting experience, and returns 97.2 percent of its scoring and 95.1 percent of its rebounding from a 2008-09 squad that won 16 games, including St. John's first BIG EAST Tournament victory since 2003.
