QUEENS, N.Y. - In front of a Belson Stadium record crowd of 2,518 fans, the No. 15/15 St. John's men's soccer team scored two second half goals to defeat Georgetown, 2-0, to open BIG EAST play. Adam Himeno tallied the game-winner and Tadeu Terra also added a goal to lead the Red Storm (2-1-2, 1-0-0). Derby Carrillo made four saves to post his third shutout of the year. Matthew Brutto made four saves in goal for Georgetown (3-2-1, 0-1-0).
"Georgetown is a very organized and physical team," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "We opened things up a bit in the second half and were able to create some opportunities to get the result."
The first good scoring chance for the Red Storm came in the 23rd minute as Josh Faga sent a header on net after a corner kick, but Brutto made the save.
Georgetown responded with a pair of shots in the 28th minute. After saving a close range shot from Scott Larrabee, Carrillo came up with another save on a point blank shot from Chandler Diggs.
Another Faga header on a corner kick sailed wide in the 38th minute and the game remained scoreless at halftime.
The Hoyas had the first chance in the second half of action as Carrillo was forced to make a leaping save on an Ian Christianson shot in the 56th minute.
St. John's responded with a pair of point blank shots in the 76th minute. After making a tremendous save on a Sverre Wegge Gundhus shot, Brutto also kept a Joel Gustafsson rebound effort out of the net.
In the 80th minute, however, St. John's would get on the board. After collecting a pass from Walter Hines, Himeno dribbled into the box and made a move past Brutto before ripping a shot into the open net.
The Red Storm extended the lead to 2-0 in the 90th minute. Wegge Gundhus opened the play with a centering pass into the box. Nelson Becerra collected the pass and played it back to Terra, who fired a shot inside the far post.
St. John's returns to action at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 20, hosting Seton Hall in BIG EAST play.
