QUEENS, N.Y. - First year head coach Steve Lavin and the St. John's men's basketball team takes on NAIA squad Westmont in an exhibition contest on Saturday at Carnesecca Arena. Tip-off against Westmont -- a private liberal arts college located in Santa Barbara, Calif., with an enrollment of 1,347 -- is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live via RedStormSports.com's StormTracker All-Access service ($9.95 per month, $79.95 annually), with announcers Sid Farooqui and Tarik Turner calling the action from courtside, and Erin Sharoni reporting from the sidelines.
- St. John's is in its 50th year of play at Carnesecca Arena, which was built in 1961 as Alumni Hall, and was renamed for the University's Hall of Fame Mentor Lou Carnesecca in the fall of 2004. STJ is now 416-78 (.842) in 49 years at Carnesecca Arena, which underwent a multi-phase upgrade over the last four offseasons. The installation of a new high-resolution video scoreboard and sound system, a refurbishing of the arena ceiling and the implementation of a new lighting system are among the series of changes Red Storm fans enjoyed in 2009-10. A new playing surface, an overhauled seating bowl with 800 chairback seats, and enhanced ticketing and lobby areas were among the improvements made for 2008-09.
- The Westmont Warriors are members of the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC), which is a part of the NAIA. The Warriors were unranked but received 56 points in the 2010-11 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll. Westmont went 21-9 in a 2009-10 campaign that ended with a 94-89 loss to Fresno Pacific in the first round of the GSAC Tournament. The Warriors lost three of their top five scorers to graduation last year in C.J. Jackson, Andrew Schmalbach and Matt LeDuc, but senior forward Dan Rasp is a two-time NAIA All-American honorable mention and a two-time All-GSAC selection. He averaged 14.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists as a junior in 2009-10. Rasp netted a game-high 22 points in Westmont's 88-68 season-opening win over Cal State Maritime on Oct. 29, and finished with 14 points and five boards in the Warriors' 95-59 exhibition loss at UCLA on Thursday. Westmont head coach John Moore is married to St. John's head coach Steve Lavin's sister, Rachel. In his 23rd year a head coach and 18th at Westmont, Moore has a 416-260 career record.
- One of the storied programs in the history of men's collegiate basketball, St. John's concluded the 2009-10 season as the seventh all-time winningest program in the NCAA Division I record book with 1,703 wins and 884 losses. The school's .658 winning percentage ranks ninth all-time in NCAA history, while St. John's 26 all-time NCAA Tournament appearances are tied for 18th. The program's 27 NIT appearances and five titles are also unprecedented. Helms Foundation national champions following the 1910-11 season, St. John's appeared in NCAA Final Fours in 1952 and 1985. The program boasts 11 consensus All-Americans, 59 NBA Draft choices and 45 players that have scored 1,000 career points or more.
