QUEENS, N.Y. - The BIG EAST announced its 2013-14 conference basketball schedule on Thursday afternoon, completing the St. John's men's basketball slate for the upcoming campaign, including league game dates, tip times and television information. FOX Sports also announced game times and broadcast data for several non-conference contests, and the remainder of the Red Storm non-conference broadcast schedule will be announced shortly.
To date, St. John's is slated to play in 23 nationally-televised games in 2013-14, with a majority coming on America's newest national sports network and BIG EAST Conference partner, FOX Sports 1. Two additional conference contests will be nationally-televised on the CBS Sports Network, FOX Sports Network (national) will air one league matchup and FOX Sports Network (regional) will carry a pair of non-conference games.
New York's Team will showcase its talented and veteran roster to basketball fans all throughout the city with games at Madison Square Garden, Barclays Center and Carnesecca Arena before and after the New Year. The Red Storm has New York City covered in 2013-14, with nine home games at the newly-renovated "World's Most Famous Arena," and 11 at Carnesecca Arena on the St. John's campus in Queens. In addition, the Red Storm plays three neutral site games at Brooklyn's new Barclays Center.
In all, St. John's could play 17 regular season games in 2013-14 against teams that participated in the postseason in 2012-13 (NCAA - Bucknell, Butler, Creighton, Georgetown, Marquette, Ole Miss, Syracuse, Villanova, Wisconsin; NIT - Providence; CIT - Youngstown State). By comparison, the Red Storm looked to face 19 such squads headed into last season and finished the year with the No. 37 strength of schedule in the nation.
The BIG EAST will ring in the New Year - and a new era of college hoops - with a five-game telecast marathon stretching from noon to Midnight on Dec. 31. The New Year's Eve games, which will be televised consecutively by the conference's media partner FOX Sports 1, will tip off the BIG EAST's 2013-14 men's basketball conference schedule, which was released today.
As part of the BIG EAST's landmark partnership with FOX Sports, every BIG EAST conference game will be televised on national and regional networks, with the majority to air on FOX Sports 1, which began broadcasting to approximately 90 million homes across the country on Aug. 17.
Led by the legendary announcing team of Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery, who has been calling BIG EAST basketball for over thirty years, FOX Sports 1 will nationally televise more than 100 games involving BIG EAST teams this coming season, beginning with non-conference play on Friday, Nov. 8 and extending through the entire 2014 BIG EAST tournament at Madison Square Garden from March 12-15.
"From the BIG EAST's version of the Times Square New Year's Eve Ball drop through the fireworks of the annual BIG EAST Tournament in the World's Most Famous Arena, the 2013-14 conference schedule will be a months-long celebration of the BIG EAST's return to its basketball roots," said BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman. "We have 10 outstanding teams with rich traditions of basketball excellence, and our comprehensive partnership with FOX Sports will ensure that our fans across the country can enjoy every moment of BIG EAST action."
Tuesday night will be a BIG EAST TUESDAY SHOWDOWN on FOX Sports 1, as the network showcases at least one BIG EAST game each Tuesday during the season. The Tuesday schedule concludes with a March 4 doubleheader featuring Creighton at Georgetown and Marquette at Providence.
Additional highlights of the 2013-14 schedule include:
- Each team will play an 18-game schedule, marking the first time since 1994-95 that the league will feature a full double round-robin format.
- The New Year's Eve marathon will feature all 10 teams, including the first BIG EAST home games for the conference's newest members: Butler, Creighton and Xavier. - FOX Sports 1 will air A SUPER SATURDAY HOOPS doubleheader, featuring Marquette vs. St. John's and Michigan State vs. Georgetown, live from Madison Square Garden, on Feb. 1, the eve of Super Bowl XLVIII in the New York/New Jersey region.
- The quest for the 2013-14 BIG EAST regular season crown will conclude with four games on Saturday, March 8 - Georgetown at Villanova, Providence at Creighton, St. John's at Marquette and Seton Hall at Butler.
- The BIG EAST Championship at The Garden, one of the elite events in all of college sports, is college basketball's longest running conference tournament at the same venue. The 10-team tourney will begin with a first-round doubleheader on Wednesday, March 12. Two quarterfinal doubleheaders will be played Thursday afternoon and evening, March 13, followed by a semifinal doubleheader Friday, March 14 and the championship game Saturday, March 15.

The 2012-13 Red Storm advanced to the Second Round of the National Invitation Tournament and finished its campaign at 17-16 (8-10 BIG EAST). St. John's 83rd winning season in history and second of The Lavin Era was its fifth since 1999-2000. The Red Storm's 2011 NCAA berth and 2013 NIT appearance under Lavin mark the first time since 2002 and 2003 that St. John's reached the postseason twice in a three-year span under one coach. The Red Storm's 63-61 March 19 NIT Opening Round win over Saint Joseph's was the first non-vacated postseason victory for St. John's since the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
St. John's projects to return 91.6 percent of its scoring and 88.3 percent of its rebounding in 2013-14, including 2013 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention selection, unanimous All-Rookie team member, seven-time BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, 2013 MBWA Rookie of the Year and All-Met second team member JaKarr Sampson, who led all BIG EAST freshmen in scoring (14.9 ppg, T-11th overall) and rebounding (6.6 rpg, 11th overall). A game-changing shotblocker and BIG EAST All-Rookie selection, Chris Obekpa led the nation in rejections with a 4.03 blocks per game average and established a new single-season St. John's and BIG EAST freshman mark with 133 rejections on the year. Guard Phil Greene IV scored at a 10.1 ppg clip and displayed his ability as a dynamic playmaker despite a hip injury, and Sir'Dominic Pointer averaged 6.9 points with 5.5 rebounds and led the team with four double-doubles. Leading scorer D'Angelo Harrison averaged 17.8 ppg in 2012-13 - good for third among all BIG EAST players - and authored several prolific performances during the Red Storm's European Tour in August.
The Red Storm also adds 2011 junior college All-American forward Orlando Sanchez, sophomore transfer sharpshooter Max Hooper and redshirt senior big man God'sgift Achiuwa (9.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg in 2011-12) to its active roster, in addition to Top 5 national point guard prospect Rysheed Jordan, who joined the Red Storm this summer in preparation for the 2013-14 campaign.
