Â
The Iona offense put itself on the board first in the top of the third as Allison Hand sent a leadoff home run over the left-center wall to give the Gaels an early 1-0 lead.
Â
St. John's wasted no time responding, however, as Hannah Anderson led off the bottom of the frame with a single up the middle. After stealing second, Anderson was able to move to third on a sac bunt before a two-out RBI single by Erin Burner tied the game at 1-1 heading into the fourth.
Â
Still knotted up 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, freshman Krystal Puga  was able to start up a two-out rally as she ripped a double into deep left field. After Ellen Czuba came in to pinch run for Puga, the senior was able to advance to third on a passed ball before Erin Burner was able to put runners on the corners with a four-pitch walk.
Â
With the go-ahead run at third, Brittany Garcia stepped into the box and blasted a three-run home run deep over the centerfield wall to put St. John's ahead, 4-1.
Â
After Tori Free was able to shut down the Gaels in order in the top of the sixth, the Red Storm looked like they were going to put up another run as it loaded the bases but Iona was able to get out of the inning with a fly ball to left to end the threat and hold the St. John's lead at 4-1.
Â
From that point on Free (6-4) was able to dominate the Iona offense, sitting the Gaels down in order in the top of the seventh to seal the 4-1 victory and pick up her sixth victory of the season after 2.2 innings of relief. Jordan Courage (2-10) took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits after allowing a pair of walks in 1.1 innings of work.
Â
For Garcia, it was a repeat performance from last season when she blasted her first collegiate home run on the road against the Gaels, as Wednesday's three-run shot marked the first homer of the 2015 season for the sophomore.
Â
The Red Storm will return to action this weekend as it kicks off a nine-game road trip starting with a three-game conference series at Seton Hall on April 18-19.
