QUEENS, N.Y. - Redshirt senior Eric DeJohn became the sixth St. John's lacrosse player to be selected in the Major League Collegiate Lacrosse Draft on Friday afternoon as the attackman was selected by the Rochester Rattlers in the seventh round.
DeJohn was selected 60th overall, becoming the first St. John's lacrosse player to be selected in the collegiate draft since Kieran McArdle and Kevin Cernuto were both selected in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft.
"We're very proud to see Eric receive the recognition he deserves. He has become one of the most dangerous attackers in the BIG EAST and in the country," said Head Coach Jason Miller. "We couldn't be happier for him."
Working under the direction and coaching of Associate Head Coach Dan Paccione, DeJohn highlighted the Red Storm's dangerous attack in 2015 as he led the team with 64 total points scored and ranked fourth in the league with 38 goals on the season. DeJohn was also the BIG EAST leader in assists per game with an average of 1.86 per game.
During his impressive 2015 campaign DeJohn was honored with six weekly BIG EAST honor roll awards, the most by a St. John's player in a single campaign in program history. The Syracuse, N.Y., native concluded his season with a first team All-BIG EAST selection.
In 2008, former Red Storm attackman Thomas Michaelsen became the program's first player to be drafted by the MLL as he was taken in the fifth round of the collegiate draft by the San Francisco Dragons. Two years later, former Red Storm defenseman Dom DeNapoli was selected by the Long Island Lizards in the ninth round of the 2010 Supplemental Draft. In 2013 LSM Dillon Ayers became the third St. John's selection in program history as he was drafted by the Denver Outlaws as the 63rd overall pick. McArdle was selected fifth overall by the Florida Launch in 2014, the highest MLL draft pick in St. John's lacrosse history. Cernuto also went 48th overall to the Chesapeake Bayhawks that year. This past summer, Mark DiFrangia was picked up by the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the MLL 2015 Undrafted College Player Pool.
Following a pair of exhibitions against the University of Massachusetts and Hartford, the Red Storm opens its 2016 season on Feb. 13 with a 1 p.m. matchup against Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J.
