Huggard nets career-high five goals on the afternoon
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's came up short to Brown, 13-8, at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Powered by a standout five-goal game from freshman Chase Huggard, St. John's (2-7, 0-0 BIG EAST) stayed competitive in a tight home matchup against Brown (5-3, 0-0 Ivy League). The Red Storm held a slight 13-12 advantage at the faceoff circle, while goalkeeper Matt Nelson recorded 14 saves, just two short of his season high, and notched his ninth game with double-digit saves, extending his streak to seven straight.
Brown came out strong, jumping to a 4-0 lead in the opening period, highlighted by three goals from Jeremy Hopsicker. St. John's responded in the second quarter, beginning with Owen Rogers putting the team on the board at 9:26, followed by Huggard's first goal at 8:19. Despite the push, the Bears carried a 7-2 lead into halftime.
Brown struck first in the second half, but Adrian Nowak answered for the Red Storm to keep the deficit at five, 8-3. The teams exchanged goals just 13 seconds apart, including Wade Bryan's second of the season at 6:44. After another Brown score, St. John's closed the third quarter with nine seconds remaining as Noah Plenn connected with Huggard in front of the net, making it 10-5.
Huggard dominated the fourth quarter, adding three more goals, two assisted by Plenn, to finish with five of St. John's eight total goals. Brown continued to respond offensively, scoring three more times down the stretch to secure a 13-8 victory.
Following Saturday's matchup, the Johnnies will host Villanova for their BIG EAST Opener on Saturday, March 28. Face-off from Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
