QUEENS, N.Y. - After closing out one of the most impressive careers in the history of the St. John's Women's Soccer program and earning her degree this spring, Emily Cubbage has been honored by the BIG EAST with the Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award.
The awards are given to one male and one female student-athlete from a BIG EAST-sponsored sport who have been admitted to a degree-granting or professional program for the following year and who have demonstrated leadership through excellence in academic credentials, athletic performance and depth of commitment to service within the institution or the community. Each honoree receives a $5,000 scholarship, which may be applied to postgraduate study. The award is named for Michael Tranghese, the BIG EAST's first full-time employee who served as commissioner of the conference from 1990 to 2009 and embodied leadership and dedication from the leagues inception. Honorees are selected by the BIG EAST Conference Academic Affairs Committee.
The Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the BIG EAST Conference during the 2015-16 academic year. In addition to this award, which was introduced for the 2010-11 academic year, 20 student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST's 10 member institutions) have been named as the winners of the BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. The conference also names male and female BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
In the classroom, Cubbage proved to be an ideal student-athlete during her time in Queens, registering a cumulative 3.90 grade point average in speech pathology & audiology. She graduated last month with her bachelors degree, summa cum laude, and will continue her studies at St. John's in the fall, pursuing a masters degree in her undergraduate field of study.
On the pitch, Cubbage played a vital role in the most successful stretch in St. John's Women's Soccer history. The Rio Rancho, N.M., native was a part of two NCAA Tournament squads during her four years on the team and captained the Red Storm to its first-ever BIG EAST Regular Season title as a senior in 2015.
The owner of seven goals and eight assists during her career, Cubbage set school records for games played (78) and games started (78). She is the only Johnny in program history to grace the starting XI during every possible contest of her career.
A two-time Second Team All-BIG EAST honoree, Cubbage was also twice named to the NSCAA All-Region Third Team as a junior and a senior.
Cubbage is the first female student-athlete from St. John's to receive the Tranghese Award and the second student-athlete overall, joining baseball's Shawn Heide, who garnered the honor last season.
