WASHINGTON - Playing its second BIG EAST road game in the span of just three days, the Red Storm struggled offensively as the Georgetown Hoyas downed the Johnnies, 83-55, at the Verizon Center on Monday night.
St. John's (8-10, 2-3 BIG EAST) made just 27.6 percent of its tries from the floor, including a 5-of-30 effort from beyond the three-point arc.
Shamorie Ponds scored a team-high 12 points to lead the Red Storm, his 17th-straight game in double figures. Marcus LoVett, who earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this afternoon after averaging 27.5 points per game in the team's last two outings, added 10 points. Bashir Ahmed also chipped in 10 points for St. John's.
L.J. Peak led Georgetown (9-8, 1-4 BIG EAST) with 16 points, including a perfect 10-of-10 effort from the charity stripe.
The Red Storm got off to a quick start on Monday night, taking a 12-8 lead after the game's first media timeout. Kassoum Yakwe scored five points in the early going for the Johnnies, including a three-point play.
The Hoyas responded with an 8-0 run to open up a 16-12 lead, eventually extending that advantage to as many as eight, 38-30, before the end of the opening stanza.
St. John's knocked the deficit down to four on a pair of occasions before the break, but Marcus Derrickson nailed a triple on the Hoyas' final possession of the half and Georgetown took a seven-point lead, 44-37, into the intermission.
Trailing by eight less than five minutes into the latter half, St. John's saw Georgetown unleash a 16-0 run to move ahead by 24, 63-39, with 9:37 left on the clock. The Johnnies were held without a point for 7:56 on the streak.
Georgetown continued to pull away over the remainder of the second half, extending its lead to as many as 30 before the final buzzer.
St. John's will return to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting the No. 3/3 Villanova Wildcats at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. on FS1 and 570 AM WMCA.
