QUEENS, N.Y. - After leading the Johnnies to their sixth BIG EAST win of the season and their second-straight inside "The World's Most Famous Arena," Marcus LoVett was named the BIG EAST's Freshman of the Week, it was announced this morning by the league office.
LoVett has earned the conference's Freshman of the Week accolade each of the last two weeks. The rookie guard has also been named to the conference's honor roll on two occasions this season (Nov. 21 and Jan. 9).
LoVett, the fifth-leading scorer in the conference with 17.3 points per game this season, led the way for the Johnnies in their win over local rival Seton Hall on Saturday, tallying 19 points, six assists, five rebounds, three steals and only one turnover in 34 minutes on action. The redshirt freshman from Fort Wayne, Ind., has now scored 19 or more points in a game 11 times this season and is averaging 19.7 points and 4.8 assists per contest over his last six appearances. The electric lefty ranks fourth in scoring among NCAA freshmen, trailing only Markelle Fultz of Washington (23.2 ppg), Malik Monk of Kentucky (21.7 ppg) and Dennis Smith Jr. of NC State (18.7 ppg).
St. John's returns to action on Wednesday night, traveling to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse for a matchup with No. 22/21 Butler at 8:30 p.m. on FS1 and 570 AM WMCA.
