QUEENS, N.Y. - After helping the Red Storm register one of the nation's most impressive turnarounds as a freshman, Shamorie Ponds has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches' All-District Second Team, it was announced on Wednesday by the organization.
Ponds shares his All-District honor with some of the BIG EAST's top talents, as Josh Hart, Trevon Blueitt, Jalen Brunson, Angel Delgado and Marcus Foster comprised the First Team, while Justin Patton, Khadeen Carrington, Andrew Chrabascz and Kelan Martin joined Ponds on the Second Team.
During his first season with the Johnnies, Ponds quickly established a reputation as one of the nation's most prolific young scorers. The Brooklyn native poured in 573 points on the campaign, surpassing the previous freshman scoring record of 544 registered by D'Angelo Harrison in 2011-12. At 17.4 points per game with 11 performances of 20 points or more, the sweet-shooting lefty ranks fifth in the BIG EAST and fifth among NCAA freshmen in scoring. Ponds sank 75 three-point field goals in 33 games this season, the second-highest single-season total in program history behind the 76 that Harrison hit in 2011-12.
Not only a highly-touted offensive talent, Ponds also solidified himself as one of league's top defenders during his first year under Head Coach Chris Mullin. With 2.3 steals per game during conference action, Ponds became the first freshman to lead the BIG EAST in that category since 1998-99 when Providence's John Linehan, the league's all-time steals leader, achieved the feat. Nationally, Ponds ranks 22nd overall and second among freshmen in steals per game.
