Junior guard named to conference list after near triple-double on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. – After falling just one rebound shy of the program's first triple-double in two decades, Shamorie Ponds has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced this afternoon by the league office.
DePaul's Max Strus, who averaged 30.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in a pair of Blue Demon victories, earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors.
In the Red Storm's lone contest of the week on Sunday evening against Wagner, Ponds came close to doing something not accomplished by a St. John's player in nearly 20 years. The junior guard finished the contest with 16 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds, falling just one board short of becoming the first Johnnie since Ron Artest in 1999 to record a triple-double.
Ponds tallied his 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, including a 2-for-2 showing from long distance. The Brooklyn native also sank all six of his tries from the charity stripe, extending his made free-throw streak to 21 dating back to the second half of the Red Storm's victory over Georgia Tech on Dec. 1.
Ponds' 14 assists shattered his previous career high of 10 recorded last season in a 26-point, 10-dime double-double at DePaul on Feb. 14. Ponds' 14 helpers were the most by a St. John's player since Omar Cook dished out 15 against UConn on Jan. 6, 2001, and tied for the fourth highest single-game total in program history. Only two men in the 112-year history of the program have dished out more assists in a single game than Ponds did last night, as Cook tallied efforts of 17 and 15 during the 2000-01 season and Mark Jackson dished out 16 against Providence on Feb. 3, 1986.
Ponds' nine boards were just one off his career high of 10, a mark that Ponds last hit against UCF on Nov. 26, 2017.
Sunday night marked Ponds' first double-double of the season and the third of his career overall.
On the year, Ponds ranks third in the BIG EAST in scoring at 21.0 points per game while leading the league in assists (5.8 apg) and steals (2.6 spg). The conference's preseason player of the year also tops the league in free throw percentage at 88.9 and assist-to-turnover ratio (3.4-to-1).
St. John's is currently one of nine unbeaten teams remaining in Division I and in the midst of the program's best start since 1982-83, Chris Mullin's sophomore season. With their win over the Seahawks, this year's Johnnies became just the seventh team in program history to begin a season 10-0 or better.
The Red Storm returns to action Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena, playing host to St. Francis Brooklyn at 6:30 p.m. on FS1 and 570 AM WMCA.
