Shamorie Ponds Named to Late Season Watch List for Wooden Award

Brooklyn native ranks third in the BIG EAST in scoring at midway mark of conference play
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's guard Shamorie Ponds continues to receive national recognition for his outstanding play this season, finding a spot on the Late Season Top 20 Watch List for the John R. Wooden Award.
Presented by the Los Angeles Athletic Club and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the Wooden Award recognizes the top player in college basketball at the end of the campaign.
Ponds, who has led the Red Storm to a 16-6 start this year, has established a reputation as one of the nation's top all-around talents. Entering the team's game against Marquette this evening, Ponds ranks third in the conference in scoring at 20.4 points per game while his 5.6 assists and 2.9 steals per outing are the best in the BIG EAST. Additionally, he currently sports the league's second best assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.4-to-1.
The Brooklyn native is one of just three players in the nation to rank in the top 40 in both points and assists per game, checking in at 39th and 36th, respectively, through games played on Monday. Murray State's Ja Morant and Howard's RJ Cole are the others. He also ranks sixth nationally in steals per game and is the only player to occupy a spot in the top 40 in all three of those categories.
The crafty southpaw has eclipsed the 20-point mark 13 times in 21 outings this season with four showings of 32 points or better. All four of his 30-point explosions have come on the road or at neutral sites.
Just 84 games into his St. John's career, Ponds has already etched his name in several spots on the Red Storm's all-time record lists. Entering tonight's contest against the Golden Eagles, Ponds' 1,649 points are good enough for 10th in St. John's history while his 362 assists and 198 steals rank seventh and sixth, respectively on the Red Storm's all-time ledger. He is the only player aside from his head coach, Chris Mullin, to occupy a spot in the top 10 in each of those three categories.
Ponds and the Red Storm will look to secure their fourth Quadrant One win of the season when they take on No. 10/9 Marquette in Milwaukee at 8 p.m. on FS1 and 570 AM WMCA.
