Morris breaks program record with third pitcher of the week award of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 15, 2019) – Senior Madison Morris has been named to her third BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week award of the season while freshman Angela Saric is selected to her first career conference Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced by the conference on Monday afternoon.
The Johnnies' duo becomes the first pair of pitchers in program history to be recognized by the BIG EAST in the same week.
Morris is the first hurler for St. John's to win three conference pitcher of the week honors in the same season. The right-hander has accumulated six BIG EAST accolades in her career, more than any other Red Storm player in the team's 39-year history.
The Hampton, Va., native earned two wins while picking up her second save in as many weekends against Seton Hall. She struck out ten batters and boasted a 0.92 ERA in 15.1 innings of work over the three-game tilt. Morris finished the series holding the Pirates' bats to a .196 average.
Saric picks up her first career Honor Roll selection after no-hitting the Pirates' lineup in game two. The Oakland, N.J., native tossed five shutout frames before being relieved by Morris in the sixth. Overall, the Red Storm's rookie allowed one run on one hit and struck out five in 6.2 innings of action. She also led the league with the lowest opposing batting average (.048).
Morris, Saric and the Red Storm will look to extend its winning streak to eight when DePaul comes to Queens for a three-game set beginning on April 18. First pitch is slated for noon.
