Johnnies will square off with Virginia or UMass in second game of the tournament at Mohegan Sun
QUEENS, N.Y. – Another piece of the St. John's men's basketball team's 2019-20 non-conference schedule was revealed on Wednesday afternoon, as it was announced that the Red Storm will take part in the 2019 Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament Presented by Citi at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
The Johnnies will kick off the action with a matchup against Arizona State on Saturday, Nov. 23, before taking on either defending national champion Virginia or UMass the following day.
"We look forward to competing in the 2019 Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena," said Head Coach Mike Anderson. "It is an honor for our program to be affiliated with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of this first-class event that will present a challenge for our team going up against top-tier competition."
The Johnnies will also host two campus site games as part of the Tip-Off Tournament, welcoming reigning America East Champion Vermont on Nov. 16 and local Ivy League foe Columbia on Nov. 19.
The Red Storm will participate in an event hosted by the Hall of Fame for the fifth time in the last five seasons. Two of those previous four outings took place at Mohegan Sun, as St. John's fell to South Carolina at the arena in 2015-16 before defeating Saint Joseph's in 2017-18.
"The Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament continues to be one of the best early season events featuring outstanding programs in a tremendous destination venue for fans," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "We're proud to host this year's field of teams, including the defending national champions, and their fans at beautiful Mohegan Sun."
St. John's will face Arizona State for the third-straight season when the two squads square off at Mohegan Sun. The teams met in December of 2017 at the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in Los Angeles, as the No. 16/17 Sun Devils pulled away from the Johnnies late for an 82-70 victory. Arizona State and St. John's met again in the First Four of this year's NCAA Tournament in Dayton. The only other meeting between the teams in program history came in the championship game of the 2010 Great Alaska Shootout, a 67-58 win for the Johnnies behind a team-high 20 points from Justin Brownlee.
The Red Storm is a combined 15-1 all-time against Virginia and UMass. The Johnnies are 7-1 against the Cavaliers with the only loss in series history coming in the second round of the 2013 NIT. St. John's fans do not have to look far to find their team's last win over a defending national champion, as LJ Figueroa's 22-point, 12-rebound double-double led the Johnnies past No. 13 Villanova this past season at Madison Square Garden. Mustapha Heron kicked in 19 points in a game that saw the Red Storm erase a 19-point first half deficit.
The Red Storm has never lost to the Minutemen, picking up eight wins in a series that dates back to 1963.
General public tickets will go on sale Friday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster and the Mohegan Sun Arena box office.
A presale opportunity for St. John's fans begins on Monday, June 3 by using the presale password REDSJU.
