Brooklyn native one of 66 players nationwide invited to combine in Chicago next week
QUEENS, N.Y. – Junior guard Shamorie Ponds has been selected as one of the 66 invitees to next week's NBA Draft Combine in Chicago, it was announced this afternoon.
Ponds is one of just two BIG EAST players to earn an invitation alongside Villanova's Eric Paschall.
This past season, Ponds became just the fifth player in program history to earn multiple selections to the All-BIG EAST First Team, joining the likes of St. John's legends Chris Mullin, Mark Jackson, Malik Sealy and Marcus Hatten. He finished fourth in the league in scoring at 19.7 points per game after recording 18 20-point performances and four showing of 32 points or more. His 650 points were good enough for the eighth highest single-season output in St. John's history, eclipsing his previous career-best of 647 set in 2017-18. Ponds currently sits in fifth place on the Red Storm's all-time scoring list with 1,870 points, good enough for the highest three-year scoring total in program history.
Far from just a prolific scorer, Ponds also finished second in the league in assists with 5.1 per game while leading both the team and the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.6-to-1. On the defensive end, Ponds led the league and finished ninth nationally with 2.6 steals per game. Ponds' 413 assists rank sixth in program history while his 225 thefts are good enough for second all-time behind Sealy (238).
Ponds, the 2018 Haggerty Award Winner, earned First Team All-Met honors for the second consecutive year. He also garnered Honorable Mention All-America accolades from the Associated Press for the second straight season.
With Ponds leading the way, the Red Storm registered its first 20-win season and NCAA Tournament appearances since 2015.
