The 2019 Major League Lacrosse Warrior Goalie of the Year will serve as the voluntary assistant coach this season
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 9, 2020) – St. John's lacrosse Head Coach Jason Miller has announced the hiring of former UMass standout goalkeeper Sean Sconone as a volunteer assistant coach. Sconone, who was the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year and Major League Lacrosse Warrior Goalie of the Year this past year, will collaborate with assistant coach Terry Mangan to train the Red Storm goaltenders, handle game day substitutions as well as provide input in other areas.
"We are really excited to have Sean join our team," Miller said. "He brings tremendous playing credentials as an All-CAA player and Major League Lacrosse Goalie of the Year that will impact our players immediately."
The Johnnies' coaching staff adds an experienced goalkeeper who led the nation in save percentage (.615) and ranked third in the country with an 8.61 goals-against-average last season. The East Islip, N.Y., native won the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award as the nation's most outstanding goalie in 2019. Sconone also became the first player in program history to win one of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's (USILA) five major awards.
After Sconone opened the 2019 MLL season without a team, he joined the Dallas Rattlers organization in June. The rookie went on to lead the league in save percentage (55.81%) and had the lowest goals-against-average with a mark of 12.09 in 14 games played.
"I am extremely excited and honored to become part of the St. John's lacrosse coaching staff," Sconone said. "Coach Miller, Coach (Dan) Paccione and Coach Mangan have welcomed me in with open arms and I am looking forward to a great start of the season."
St. John's opens its regular season for the sixth-consecutive year against former conference rival Rutgers on Saturday, Feb. 8, at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, N.J.
