St. John’s duo nabs BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, Honor Roll nod for second time in six days
QUEENS, N.Y. – For the second time in as many tries, Julian Champagnie and Greg Williams Jr. have been honored by the BIG EAST for their stellar play. Champagnie garnered his second straight BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolade while Williams earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time in six days.
In a 1-1 week for the Red Storm, Champagnie averaged 22.0 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor (16-for-30) and 54.5 percent from three-point range (6-for-11). The Brooklyn native entered the critical week averaging 9.2 points and 6.3 rebounds in 29 appearances.
In his first trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Champagnie set a new season-high for scoring before the halftime buzzer had even sounded. In the opening 16 minutes of action, the Bishop Loughlin graduate scored 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including a 4-for-4 showing from three-point range. Champagnie, who had scored no more than 15 points in his first 29 games, went on to finish the game with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting and six rebounds.
On Saturday against Marquette in the Red Storm's regular season finale, Champagnie posted his second straight 20-point outing and fourth double-double of the campaign, finishing with 21 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. Champagnie sealed the Red Storm's victory with a stellar play on the defensive end, stripping All-American guard Markus Howard as the BIG EAST's all-time leading scorer was driving with a chance to tie the game in the final seconds.
On the year, Champagnie is averaging 10.0 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds. He ranks in the top three among BIG EAST freshmen in scoring, rebounding, steals (1.2 per game) and blocks (0.8 per game).
Williams, who earned his first honor roll nod last week after scoring a career-high 21 points against then-No. 10/11 Creighton, proved vital once again in a crucial week for the Red Storm. The sophomore guard from Lafayette, La., averaged 14.0 points on 10-of-19 (52.6%) shooting, including a 3-for-7 (42.9%) showing from long distance. Williams also chipped in 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per contest in the Red Storm's 1-1 week.
On Wednesday against Butler, Williams joined Champagnie in double figures, scoring 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting and grabbing five boards.
Inside "The World's Most Famous Arena" on Saturday, the Lafayette Christian Academy product finished second on the team in scoring once again, posting 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including a 2-for-5 effort from beyond the arc. Williams, who reached double figures for the fourth straight game, also recorded four steals, three assists and three rebounds in 34 minutes of action.
Since entering the starting lineup against Georgetown on Feb. 2, Williams is averaging 9.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting 45.5 percent from the floor and 46.4 percent from three-point range.
Champagnie, Williams and the ninth-seeded Red Storm will open BIG EAST Tournament action on Wednesday when they square off with eighth-seeded Georgetown. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The winner of that game will earn a date with Regular Season Co-Champion Creighton on Thursday at 12 p.m.
