Former Red Storm Standouts Remember Historic 1998-99 Campaign

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Red Storm men's basketball program will host the latest edition of a virtual speaker series that reconnects former greats with Johnnie faithful on Monday, September 21 at 8 p.m. for A St. John's Basketball Chat with the 1999 Elite Eight Team. Several members of the squad will share their memories from the program's deep run in the NCAA Tournament and talk St. John's hoops with Head Coach Mike Anderson. Red Storm Director of Athletics Mike Cragg will also join the conversation moderated by FOX Sports analyst and St. John's radio personality Vin Parise.

Led by upperclassmen Tyrone Grant, Lavor Postell and Bootsy Thornton along with future NBA First Round Draft picks the former Ron Artest and Erick Barkley, St. John's earned the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament South Regional before knocking off Samford, Indiana and Maryland to make the sixth Elite Eight in program history. The team's supporting cast featured New York City natives Chudney Gray, Reggie Jessie, Kareem Syed, as well as Collin Charles, Donald Emanuel and Albert Richardson.
St. John's finished the 1998-99 campaign with a 28-9 overall record, including a 14-4 league mark, and advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament championship game for just the fifth time in program history. Artest garnered First Team All-BIG EAST honors and became just the 10th player in program history to earn consensus All-America status that season. Thornton was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, Postell received Third Team honors and Barkley landed a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
The Johnnies began their historic March Madness run in Orlando with a 26-point win over No. 14 Samford before stunning No. 6 Indiana by 25 points to advance to the second weekend of the tournament for the first time since 1991.
St. John's next stop was Knoxville, Tenn., where the Johnnies rallied to a 14-point victory over No. 2 Maryland. Barkley shined in St. John's Sweet 16 victory against the Terrapins, finishing with a game-high 24 points and nine assists to secure a date two days later with fourth-seeded Ohio State. After trailing the Buckeyes by nine with a minute and a half to play, St. John's whittled down Ohio State's lead to one point with 12 seconds on the clock before coming up just short of a Final Four berth.
