QUEENS, N.Y. – With less than a week remaining before the official start of the 2021-22 college basketball season, St. John's junior wing Julian Champagnie has been named to the preseason watch list for the NABC Player of the Year Award, it was announced on Thursday by the organization.
Â
Champagnie is one of only 20 players nationwide to qualify for the preseason watch list. Champagnie and fifth-year Villanova guard Collin Gillespie are the only two BIG EAST players in the league to earned selection to the watch list.
Â
Last season, Champagnie garnered First Team All-BIG EAST selection after averaging a league-best 19.8 points per game and anchoring the Red Storm to a winning record in BIG EAST play for the first time since 2014-15. The 6-foot-8 wing also led the conference in free throw percentage (88.7%) while finishing inside the top 10 in rebounding (7.4-7th), 3-pointers made (2.4-5th), steals (1.4-4th) and blocks (1.0-9th).
Â
Champagnie, who became just the fourth player in program history to lead the BIG EAST in scoring over the course of a conference season, scored 12 or more points in all 25 of his appearances with 11 performances of 20 or more points. He recorded seven double-doubles, good enough for the second highest total in the conference.
Â
Last season, Champagnie finished 25th in the nation in scoring overall and sixth among high-major players. Vanderbilt's Scotty Pippen Jr. is the only returning high-major talent in the nation to turn in a better scoring average than Champagnie.
Â
St. John's will play its first official game of the 2021-22 season on Nov. 9 when it welcomes Mississippi Valley State to Carnesecca Arena for a 7:45 p.m. tip. Individual game and season tickets are available for purchase now by visiting RedStormTix.com or by calling 1-888-GO-STORM. Fans with questions about ticket packages can also email redstormsports@stjohns.edu to be contacted by a ticket representative.
