Lloyd Wheeler elevated to video coordinator, Steven Rudd and Brendyn Taylor named graduate assistants
QUEENS, N.Y. – With the start of the 2021-22 academic year just over a month away, the St. John's men's basketball program announced the appointment of three individuals for the upcoming season.
Lloyd Wheeler, who served as a graduate assistant for the past two years, will be the team's video coordinator beginning this season. Additionally, Steven Rudd and Brendyn Taylor will join the staff as graduate assistants.
Wheeler, a Queens native who will begin his third season under Anderson's tutelage in 2021-22, completed a master's degree in sport management this past spring. As a graduate assistant, Wheeler played a part in nearly every aspect of the Red Storm, including film breakdown, opponent scouting and day-to-day program logistics.
Before coming to St. John's, Wheeler played at Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D., where he earned NAIA Scholar Athlete recognition in 2016-17 and was a two-time President's List honoree. Wheeler began his collegiate career at The University of Pittsburgh Titusville from 2013-15, where he scored nearly 1,000 points and collected all-conference honors.
Rudd spent the past four seasons as a student manager for the St. John's men's basketball program, including serving as a head manager for the 2020-21 campaign. In addition to leading a team of five student managers, Rudd also played a vital role in the team's equipment and travel operations on road trips while also assisting in the set-up and breakdown of practices. Additionally, Rudd also aided in the Red Storm's video operations and scouting.
Taylor brings a wealth of basketball experience at all levels to his position on the Red Storm staff. One of the top-rated recruits in the state of California following a standout career at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, Taylor played two seasons and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California before moving on to Santa Clara University as a graduate transfer. After playing in 24 games at Santa Clara, Taylor helped lead Bushnell University to a Cascade Collegiate Conference title and a spot in the Sweet 16 of the NAIA National Basketball Tournament.
After finishing his collegiate career at Northwest Christian University under Oregon legend Luke Jackson, Taylor undertook a brief professional stint in Germany for Baunach Young Pikes. Upon returning to the States, Taylor began his coaching career at Burbank's Providence High School under Head Coach Brandon Lincoln, helping the team achieve a cumulative record of 75-25 in three seasons.
Taylor is the son of Brian Taylor, a second round NBA draft pick and the 1973 ABA Rookie of the Year out of Princeton who enjoyed a 10-year career in the NBA and ABA. His brother, Bryce Taylor, played four seasons at Oregon before embarking on a decade-long professional career in Europe.
