St. John’s Readies for Showdown with Georgetown

The Red Storm hits the road for a BIG EAST battle with Hoyas.
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 24, 2022) – The St. John's women's basketball team hits the road for a BIG EAST battle at Georgetown on Tuesday night at McDonough Arena.
Tip-off on the BIG EAST Digital Network is slated for 7 p.m. with Monika Moore and Jeremy Huber on the call.
St. John's (5-12, 1-6 BIG EAST) heads to Washington D.C. following a loss to then-ranked No. 9 Connecticut 75-57 at Carnesecca Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Johnnies shot 42.6 percent from the field and held the 24-14 advantage when it came to points off turnovers, but the Huskies posted the 38-30 advantage in the paint and the 14-4 edge with second chance points.
Kadaja Bailey led the Red Storm with 21 points. The Long Beach, N.Y., native went 10-for-17 from the floor while also recording three assists and three steals. Leilani Correa posted double-figures, shooting 7-for-14 from the field and 2-for-4 from three for 19 points.
The Johnnies enter the contest second in the league in scoring offense with 73.1 points per game. St. John's also ranks third in the conference with 7.6 3-pointers made per game. Correa paces the BIG EAST with 20.3 points per outing and ranks 13th nationally in the category. Bailey also ranks in the top-10 in the league for scoring with her 15.3 points, placing her sixth. Danielle Patterson's 6.7 boards per contest land the Brooklyn native 11th in the conference.
Head Coach Joe Tartamella enters the game with a record of 175-127 in his 10th season leading the Red Storm, one victory shy of tying his mentor, Kim Barnes Arico, for first place on the program's all-time wins list. Tartamella spent nine seasons on Barnes Arico's staff, starting as a graduate assistant in 2002 before serving three years as an assistant coach and four seasons as the program's associate head coach. Tartamella has been to six postseasons as the Red Storm's head coach, including a trio of NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2016, his Johnnies won the program's first BIG EAST title since 1988.
Georgetown enters the game at 6-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play. The team has lost four-straight with the last win coming against Coppin State on Dec. 13. During their last contest, the Hoyas fell in overtime 66-58 to the Providence. Kelsey Ransom led the way with 21 points for the Hoyas as well as a team-best nine rebounds. Milan Bolden-Morris was the other Hoya in double figures with 16 as well as six rebounds.
For the season, Georgetown is averaging 59.4 points while shooting 39.4 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from beyond the arc. Bolden-Morris paces the team with 13.0 points per game and Ransom follows closely behind the Belle Glade, Fla. Native with 12.6 points per outing. Jillian Archer posts 7.4 rebounds per game to lead the squad in boards.
