St. John’s junior averaged 29.0 points and 5.0 steals in wins over Xavier and Butler
QUEENS, N.Y. – One day after claiming his first BIG EAST Player of the Week award this season, Julian Champagnie earned Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week honors from the United State Basketball Writers Association and was named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week.
Champagnie, a First Team All-Met Selection in 2021 and the 2020 All-Met Rookie of the Year, earned his accolades after averaging 29.0 points, 5.0 steals, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 block during a 2-0 stretch against Xavier and Butler.
The Brooklyn native began his week by pouring in 27 points on 9-of-19 shooting at Xavier. Champagnie also matched a career-high with five assists and nabbed three steals in the Red Storm's first win at Cintas Center since Feb. 14, 2015. The junior wing went a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity to help the Johnnies pick up a crucial Quad One win.
Just two days later against Butler in Queens, Champagnie exploded for 31 points on 11-of-22 shooting, including a 4-of-9 effort from three. The junior wrapped a perfect week at the free throw line, making all five of his tries. In addition to recording his third 30-point performance of the season, Champagnie also tallied seven rebounds and a career-high seven steals. Only two players in the history of St. John's Men's Basketball have ever registered more than seven steals in a game: Marcus Hatten and Bernard Rencher. The Red Storm's 91-57 win over the Bulldogs matched the program's largest-ever margin of victory in BIG EAST play, equaling a 104-70 drubbing of Providence on Feb. 15, 1999.
St. John's, who has risen to no. 66 in the NET, will return to action on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena when the Red Storm takes on Creighton. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. on FS1. Limited tickets are available for purchase by clicking here or calling 1-888-GO-STORM.
