Julian Champagnie Agrees to Two-Way Contract with 76ers

Brooklyn native secures free-agent deal with Philadelphia
QUEENS, N.Y. – Former St. John's star Julian Champagnie has agreed to a two-way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2022-23 season.

The two-time First Team All-BIG EAST selection completed his St. John's career ranked 20th on the school's all-time scoring list, pouring in 1,408 points in just 88 career appearances, good enough for an average of 16.0 points per game.  Additionally, Champagnie also ranks fourth all-time at St. John's in made 3-pointers (149) and sixth in career free throw percentage (81.5%). Champagnie, who led the squad in rebounding during each of his three campaigns in Queens, ranks 32nd on the program's career ledger with 598 boards.Â

This past season, Champagnie ranked second in the BIG EAST and 35th in the country at 19.2 points per game. One of five finalists for the Julius Erving Award, Champagnie reached double figures 26 times in 31 appearances with 14 efforts of 20-plus points, including a trio of 30-point showings. The local product also recorded four double-doubles, finished second in the league with 2.0 steals per contest and cracked the top 10 in the BIG EAST with 1.1 blocks per outing.Â

As a sophomore, Champagnie burst onto the scene by leading the conference with 19.8 points per game and winning the BIG EAST's Most Improved Player Award. He ranked 25th overall in Division I and sixth among high-major players in scoring average while also ranking inside the top 10 in the BIG EAST in free throw percentage (1st- 88.7%), 3-pointers made (5th- 2.4), rebounding (7th- 7.4), steals (4th- 1.4) and blocks (9th- 1.0). Champagnie, who reached double figures in all 25 of his games, became just the fourth player in St. John's history to lead the BIG EAST in scoring over the course of a conference season, joining Chris Mullin, Walter Berry and Marcus Hatten in that esteemed fraternity. He also became just the fifth Johnnie to find a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team as a sophomore, joining Mullin, Ron Artest, Erick Barkley and Shamorie Ponds.Â

 A largely unheralded recruit out of Brooklyn's Bishop Loughlin High School, Champagnie put together a solid freshman campaign, winning All-Met Rookie of the Year honors and earning selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. The two-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week averaged 9.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, including outputs of 13.6 points and 7.6 boards per outing over his final 10 appearances. He scored in double figures 17 times and recorded four double-doubles, the highest total by a St. John's freshman since Moe Harkless tallied 11 double-doubles in 2011-12 before being drafted 15th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Champagnie joins his twin brother, Justin, in the pro ranks. Justin, who played his college basketball at Pittsburgh, made 36 appearances with the Toronto Raptors in 2021-22 and averaged 24.1 points in 15 outings with the organization's G-League affiliate. The twins' father, Ranford Champagnie, was a member of the 1996 Red Storm men's soccer team that won a national championship.
