AJ Storr Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week; Joel Soriano Earns Spot on BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

Storr averaged 13.0 points on 56.3 percent shooting in wins over Butler and No. 6/7 UConn
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a pair of victories over Butler and No. 6/7 UConn, AJ Storr captured his first career BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award while teammate Joel Soriano was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the league on Monday.
In a pair of starts, Storr averaged 13.0 points per game, shooting 56.3 percent (9-16 FG) from the field and 42.9 percent (3-7 3FG) from distance. Storr also converted 71.4 percent (5-7 FT) of his attempts at the free-throw line last week. The 6-foot-6 wing from Rockford, Ill., is the first Johnnie to earn the league's freshman of the week honor since Posh Alexander received the accolade four times during the 2020-21 campaign.
Storr played a key role in the Red Storm's 85-74 road victory over the Huskies on Sunday. He registered 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting and grabbed four boards in 24 minutes of action. Earlier in the week, Storr went for 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including a 2-for-3 effort from distance in a 16-point win over Butler at Carnesecca Arena.
Since earning his first career start at Providence on Jan. 7, Storr has averaged 10.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.
Soriano received his fifth weekly accolade of the season after averaging 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in last week's sweep of Butler and UConn. The Johnnies' big man converted 17-of-23 field goal attempts (73.9 percent) over two games and tallied a pair of double-doubles to bump his NCAA-leading total to 16.
The Yonkers native led six Johnnies in double figures against the nationally ranked Huskies, finishing with 19 points to go with 13 boards. Soriano scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half to help St. John's snap the Huskies' 15-game home win streak dating back to last season. He shot 10-for-13 from the field and blocked a pair of shots in the 11-point win at UConn.
On Tuesday, Soriano scored 20 points and grabbed 10 boards against the Bulldogs. It marked his fifth 20-point performance of the season.
In BIG EAST action this season, Soriano currently leads the league averaging 11.5 rebounds while ranking second in the conference with 18.5 points per game.
The Johnnies return to action at home on Friday inside Madison Square Garden against Villanova. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at "The World's Most Famous Arena."
