Joel Soriano Named Naismith Trophy Player of the Week

QUEENS, N.Y. – Double-double machine Joel Soriano earned another weekly award on Monday, as he was named Naismith Trophy Player of the Week for his outstanding performances against Butler and No. 6/7 UConn.

The Red Storm big man is the first Johnnie to capture the Naismith Trophy Player of the Week honor since Shamorie Ponds on Jan. 8, 2019.

The BIG EAST's leading rebounder powered the Red Storm to a pair of victories last week, averaging 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per contest. The Johnnies' center knocked down 17 of his 23 shots (73.9 percent) over the two games.

The Yonkers native produced his NCAA-leading 16^th double-double of the season behind a 19-point, 13-board showing to help lead St. John's past the sixth-ranked Huskies, 85-74, inside XL Center on Sunday. Earlier in the week, Soriano registered 20 points and 10 boards against Butler on Tuesday.

The Johnnies will make the 2023 debut at Madison Square Garden on Friday when Villanova comes to town. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
