QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Athletics Hall of Famer and former men's basketball standout Bill Schaeffer will be honored on Saturday, Feb. 18 during the Red Storm's contest with No. 18/19 Creighton in this year's St. John's Basketball Legends Series Bobblehead Giveaway. The first 2,500 fans in attendance at Carnesecca Arena for the Johnnies' 7:30 p.m. showdown with the nationally-ranked Bluejays will receive the collectible courtesy of Coca-Cola.
Schaeffer, who currently serves as the Director of Development for the Peter J. Tobin College of Business, enjoyed a decorated playing career with the Johnnies, before earning his bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1973.
Schaeffer scored 1,484 points in 79 career appearances from 1970-73, a total that still ranks 15th on the St. John's all-time scoring list. In addition, the former Johnnie star shot a career 56.0 percent from the field, which ranks fourth in program history, while grabbing 622 career rebounds, placing him 29th on that all-time list. Playing under head coach Frank Mulzoff, Schaeffer helped lead St. John's to a 56-27 record in his three varsity seasons.
In 1970-71, Schaeffer averaged 14.4 points and 6.3 rebounds in 25 appearances for the Johnnies. As a junior, Schaeffer increased his production on the court, averaging 17.1 points per contest and posting a field goal percentage of 58.1, a St. John's record at the time.
During his final season in 1972-73, Schaeffer scored 643 points in 26 games, averaging 24.7 points per contest, a school record that still stands today. He shot 59.4 percent from the field, breaking his own record set a season earlier, which currently ranks sixth on the program's single season field goal percentage chart. Schaeffer also pulled down 290 rebounds, averaging 11.2 per contest that season.
For his efforts, Schaeffer received the Haggerty Award in 1973, a prestigious honor presented by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association to the top player in the metropolitan area. Schaeffer's excellence on the court as a senior also earned him several All-America accolades, the most notable being named Third Team All-America selection by the Associated Press and United Press International.
Schaeffer was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 23rd overall pick in the 1973 NBA Draft. He played two seasons with the New York Nets in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and was a member of the organization's 1973-74 championship team.
