Red Storm to face Purdue in the First Four on Thursday at Ohio State
QUEENS, N.Y.- For the first time since 2016 and the 11th time in the program's history, the St. John's women's basketball team is heading to the NCAA Tournament.
The 11th-seeded Red Storm will take on 11th-seeded Purdue on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio in the play-in game. The winner will advance to face sixth-seeded North Carolina on Saturday in Round of 64.
Thursday's First Four contest will tip-off at 7 p.m. on Thursday night from the Jerome Schottenstein Center on Ohio State's campus. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
The Johnnies heard their name called after a 2022-23 campaign filled with smashing records and posting a 22-8 overall record. St. John's holds two wins over top-15 opponents and spent multiple weeks ranked in both national polls.
St. John's was one of nine teams in NCAA Division I to complete its non-conference slate with an undefeated record. The Red Storm got off to its best start in program history, winning its first 13 games.
In his 11th season in charge, Head Coach Joe Tartamella took a new-look roster and led the squad to a remarkable year coming off two losing seasons. For his efforts, Tartamella racked up the BIG EAST Coach of the Year award and was named a Naismith National Coach of the Year semifinalist.
Individually, Red Storm players made huge strides in leading the team to its most regular season victories since 2009-10. Jayla Everett was named a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team and leads the team averaging 15.8 points per game. Veterans Unique Drake and Kadaja Bailey also garnered accolades. Drake was named the conference's sixth woman of the year and Bailey was tabbed honorable mention by the league.
St. John's makes its return to the Big Dance for the first time in seven years, when it won the BIG EAST title in 2016. Tartamella will make his fourth tournament appearance while leading the Red Storm, tying his predecessor Kim Barnes-Arico for the most by a St. John's head coach in program history.
