DePaul transfer and Newark, N.J. native to join the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's basketball team announced the addition of versatile combo guard Tara Daye on Tuesday.
Daye spent her freshman season at DePaul, where she appeared in 27 games and made one start for the Blue Demons.
"We are very excited to add Tara to our St. John's family," Head Coach Joe Tartamella said. "Her competitive mentality, athleticism and toughness will make her successful in a league she is already familiar with."
Daye earned her spot in the rotation and averaged 11.8 minutes per game for the Blue Demons. The guard shot 42.6 percent from the field, averaged 1.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.
On Feb. 6, Daye earned the first league honors of her budding collegiate career when she was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after leading the conference in assists over that span. During a two-game stretch the rookie averaged 7.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists. On Feb. 1, she added a season-high 10 points at Creighton. The following game in a win over Xavier on Feb. 4, the guard earned her first collegiate start and dished out 12 assists, which matched the most by any Blue Demon this season.
"Tara provides depth for us at multiple spots on the floor," Tartamella said. "We are excited that she'll be able to play in front of her family and friends."
Daye, a Newark N.J., native will stay in the conference but head closer to home when she arrives in Queens this summer. In her high school years, Daye was a decorated three-sport athlete at University High and Blair Academy.
On the hardwood, Daye was an integral part of two NJSIAA state championships in 2017-18 and 2018-19. During the second title run as a sophomore at University High, she averaged 16.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and was named an all-state honoree.
A dynamic athlete, Daye won a pair of sectional titles in the 400-meter dash and was a second team all-state volleyball player.
Aside from sports, Daye was an active member of her school community spending four years as the class president and was voted student body president her senior year. An excellent student, Daye was valedictorian at Blair Academy and was honored as the Essex Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2021.
