Soriano named to All-Met First Team, Alexander garners All-Met Third Team recognition and Storr named All-Met Rookie of the Year
QUEENS, N.Y.  – The Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) announced Wednesday that three St. John's players earned All-Met honors for the 2022-23 campaign. Joel Soriano was selected to the All-Met First Team, Posh Alexander collected All-Met Third Team honors, while AJ Storr was named the All-Met Rookie of the Year.
Â
Soriano, the 2022-23 BIG EAST Most Improved Player, had a career season averaging 15.2 points and 11.9 rebounds per game, the latter ranked fourth in Division I. Soriano also registered 25 double-doubles, the second-highest total in the country and the most by a Johnnie in a single season since St. John's legend Walter Barry logged 28 in 1985-86.
Â
An All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, Soriano pulled down 393 rebounds this past season, which were the seventh most in program history. The Red Storm big man also became the ninth St. John's player all-time to grab 500 or more rebounds in his first two seasons with the program after collecting 558 boards in 63 appearances with the Johnnies.
Â
The Yonkers native was a force in BIG EAST action, posting 11.5 rebounds per game to become the first St. John's player to top the league's rebounding chart through a conference season. He also led the team and ranked eighth in the BIG EAST with 15.3 points per game and a 55.5 field goal shooting percentage in conference play.
Â
Soriano was named the MBWA Player of the Week twice this past season. He earned his first player of the week award on Dec. 20 after guiding the Red Storm to a 93-79 victory over Florida State posting a career-high 23 points to go with 12 rebounds. Then on Jan. 17, Soriano earned his second MBWA Player of the Week honor by averaging 19.5 points and 11.5 boards in wins over Butler and eventual National Champion UConn.
Â
Storr became the 15th Red Storm player since 1982 to win All-Met Rookie of the Year and the third Johnnie in the last four years. Red Storm standouts Julian Champagnie (2019) and Alexander (2021) were the most recent recipients of the honor.
Â
The 2023 All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selection was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week three times for his efforts this past season. Storr elevated his play in league action, averaging 10.5 points per game in 20 BIG EAST appearances. He registered double figures 11 times, including a pair of 20-point performances, with a career-high 23 points at Creighton (Jan. 25), followed by a 20-point showing versus No. 18/23 UConn (Feb. 25).
Â
Overall, the Rockford, Ill., native averaged 8.8 points per game, shooting 43.4 percent from the field in 33 appearances in 2022-23. Storr also buried 38 3-pointers, third-most on the team, while hitting 40.4 percent of his attempts from distance, which led all BIG EAST freshmen and ranked sixth overall.
Â
After coming off the bench through the first five league games, Storr averaged 12.0 points per outing in his 15 BIG EAST starts. One of his biggest buckets of the season came on Jan. 29 at Madison Square Garden when he drained the game-winning 3-pointer with just seconds remaining to edge Georgetown, 75-73.
Â
Alexander earns his third-straight All-MET honor, having been named to the First Team in 2021 and Second Team in 2022. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native averaged 10.2 points while dishing out 4.2 assists per game through 30 appearances in 2022-23.
Â
Alexander also led the BIG EAST with 2.0 steals per contest. The junior guard was one of only four BIG EAST players to tally six steals in a contest this season, and the only one to do it on two occasions against Merrimack (Nov. 7) and Butler (Jan. 10).
Â
Alexander was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice this season this season. His first league recognition came on Feb. 13 after delivering a pair of solid performances against Butler and No. 20/17 Providence. Over the two starts, he averaged 13.5 points, shooting 57.9 percent (11-19 FG) from the field, to go with 7.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game.
