QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team will participate in the 2023 Shriners Children's Charleston Classic on November 16, 17 and 19, as announced by ESPN Events on Thursday. The Johnnies join an eight-team field that also includes Dayton, Houston, LSU, North Texas, Towson, Utah, and Wake Forest for the 15th annual event held at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.
Matchups, tip times and ESPN platform designations will be announced at a later date.
Led by Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, St. John's will make its second appearance all-time in the Charleston Classic. Each team competes in one game per day, advancing through a bracket-tournament format. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will square off in a championship contest. Past Charleston Classic champions include College of Charleston (2022), St. Bonaventure (2021), Florida (2020) and Virginia Tech (2019).
Seven of the eight teams in this year's field produced winning records last season, including the Johnnies who won 18 games and were led by All-BIG EAST selection Joel Soriano. Soriano returns for his senior campaign in Queens after leading St. John's with 15.2 points per contest in 2022-23, while ranking second in Division I with 25 double-doubles and fourth in the nation averaging 11.9 rebounds.
The Red Storm previously participated in the 2012 edition of the Charleston Classic. St. John's defeated host school College of Charleston in the opening game before falling to Murray State and No. 16 Baylor. Former Johnnie standout D'Angelo Harrison was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 22.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals over the three games.
Tickets will be available for purchase following the announcement of the complete tournament schedule later this summer. Visit CharlestonClassic.com for more information.
