Red Storm ready for 18-match slate with opener on Aug. 17 against Fairleigh Dickinson
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's soccer team announced its 18-match fall schedule on Wednesday.
The slate includes eight non-conference matches with multiple opponents from the Ivy League, Patriot League and NEC followed by 10 BIG EAST showdowns.
The Red Storm is coming off a 7-5-7 record during the 2022 campaign and its second consecutive trip to the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals. Broadcast information for all contests will be announced at a later date and all times are listed in Eastern Standard Time. Admission to all home games is free.
After two home exhibition matches against Wagner (Aug. 8) and Rider (Aug. 12), the Johnnies will kick-off the regular season at home against Fairleigh Dickinson at 7:30 p.m. The Knights are the defending NEC Champions and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in seven years with their postseason berth in 2022. This will mark the fourth meeting between the two schools and first since 2015. The Johnnies have won all three prior meetings and tallied three goals in each contest.
Three days later, the squad will head to Annapolis, Md., to face Navy in a return trip from last year's 2-0 Red Storm victory, where Melina Couzis and Michelle Money found the back of the net to power St. John's past the Mids. This year's contest on Aug. 20 is set to commence at 1 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
A week later, Head Coach Ian Stone's crew will face its second-straight road test against a Patriot League foe when it heads to Colgate for a 1 p.m. tilt at Beyer-Small Field. The non-conference battle marks the third all-time between the two programs and the first not to be held at a neutral site.
St. John's will then host five of its next six contests beginning with its first of three home matches against Ivy League opponents when it faces Penn on Aug. 31. For the second year in a row on Labor Day, the squad will take on Central Connecticut State in New Britain, Conn at 4 p.m. In 2022, Ava Collins logged a brace to surge the Red Storm past the Blue Devils in a 3-0 rout at home.
After the road match, the Johnnies will ready for four straight in Queens starting with Lehigh on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. before hosting Yale on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. and Harvard on Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
In their BIG EAST opener and the conclusion of a four-game homestand, the Johnnies will look to knock off three-time defending conference champion Georgetown on Sept. 21 at Belson Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., as the Red Storm will look to snap a seven-match skid against the Hoyas.
Following the four-game homestand, the Red Storm will hit the road for a pair of nearby BIG EAST matchups against UConn on Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. and Seton Hall on Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. In its last meeting with the Huskies, the Red & White prevailed, advancing 4-2 on penalty kicks to earn a spot in the BIG EAST Semifinals last October.
As the month turns, the Red Storm will battle Villanova at Belson Stadium on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. St. John's has won five straight at home against the Wildcats.
Next up is a trip to Omaha on Oct. 5 to meet Creighton at Morrison Stadium at 7 p.m. Last year, the match between the Johnnies and Bluejays came down to the wire in Queens with the home side salvaging a point on a late-game equalizer off the head of Brooke Boyd with nine seconds remaining.
On Oct. 8, the Red Storm will host Providence for a 1 p.m. start, then Butler four days later on Oct. 12 for a 7 p.m. kick-off. The Friars and Johnnies will meet for the 39th time in program history.
A Midwest swing is to follow as St. John's will play Xavier on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. and Marquette on Oct. 22 at 2 p.m.
The regular season finale is set for Oct. 26 against DePaul at 7 p.m. The last time these two met at Belson Stadium, the Red Storm grabbed a 1-0 victory on Sept. 26, 2021, fueled by an early goal from Collins.
