St. John’s Director of Athletics presented on NIL at national convention on Sunday in Orlando
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Director of Athletics Mike Cragg served as a featured speaker at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) annual conference on Sunday in Orlando. Cragg along with Stephen F. Austin Director of Athletics Ryan Ivey presented to a group of approximately 75 NCAA Division I athletic directors, administrators, and conference officials on the topics of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and Alston legislation.
"In gathering at the NACDA Convention with peers from across the country, it was a valuable opportunity to engage in open and constructive dialogue about the profound changes brought forth by Name, Image, and Likeness," said Cragg. "I am thankful to NACDA leadership for inviting me to contribute.
"NIL has forever altered the dynamics of collegiate athletics, empowering our student-athletes to seize control of their personal brands and pursue their entrepreneurial aspirations. It is our duty as administrators to champion their success and ensure they are equipped with the resources and support they need to thrive."
Cragg and Ivey led a panel discussion and organized joint breakout sessions on the topics of NIL, collectives and Alston legislation. During the hour-long session, participants collaborated to discuss the opportunities and challenges, while learning about the effective practices that Cragg and Ivey have implemented within their departments. Director of Business Development Kevin Barefoot at Teamworks also participated in the session and briefly discussed how the tools within their technology solutions can benefit athletic departments in their NIL efforts.
Under Cragg's leadership, St. John's Athletics launched its UNLIMITED program in November 2020 to provide student-athletes educational, networking and leadership opportunities, as well as NIL resources to maximize the prospects of new legislation surrounding Name, Image, and Likeness. One of the first of its kind, St. John's UNLIMITED has leveraged strategic partnerships with INFLCR, Brandr Group, Boardroom, and several others to provide NIL opportunities for Red Storm student-athletes and to advance the department's goal of creating championship level programs at St. John's.
St. John's UNLIMITED also features an academic minor in Sports Leadership and Branding through a partnership with The Peter J. Tobin College of Business and The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies which focuses on key areas of NIL such as financial literacy, brand management and entrepreneurship. In addition, the St. John's UNLIMITED program has supported the efforts of third-party collectives, such as Storm Marketing, which has positively impacted the University's student-athlete population in this new era of NIL.
