St. John’s and Food Bazaar Score Big Through Free Throws For Food

The official Supermarket of St. John’s Athletics helps support St. John’s Bread & Life and Allen Women’s Resource Center
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's and Food Bazaar, the official supermarket of St. John's Athletics teamed up to support St. John's Bread & Life and the Allen Women's Resource Center during the 2025-26 season.
For the fifth consecutive season, St. John's Sports Properties and Food Bazaar Supermarket collaborated on "Free Throws for Food," a charitable giving initiative, in which Food Bazaar Supermarket donates $10 in food for every free throw made by St. John's men's and women's basketball. An added element to the program this season was the inclusion of incentive targets for both teams. Both Red Storm programs hit their target number from the charity stripe resulting in Food Bazaar making an additional $20,000 donation.
The men's basketball team made 589 free throws during the 2025-26 regular season, surpassing their target goal of 400 against Butler on Jan. 28 triggering Food Bazaar's boost to $10,000 in food donated to St. John's Bread & Life in Brooklyn. The women's basketball team made 365 free throws during the 2025-26 regular season, achieving its target of 30 makes to earn a donation of $10,000 in food to the Allen Women's Resource Center in Jamaica, Queens.
"Free Throws for Food is such a special program, using the power of sports and St. John's basketball to make a difference in our local communities," said St. John's Sports Properties General Manager Kevin Waters. "Seeing Food Bazaar Supermarket continually find creative ways to expand this program to assist even more individuals and families is truly inspiring."
St. John's Bread & Life is one of the premier emergency food providers in New York City, annually distributing over 4.5 million meals. Through on-site pantry distribution, hot grab-and-go meals, the mobile pantry and mobile soup kitchen, St. John's Bread & Life served 476,000 individuals this past year. St. John's University students, faculty and employees have been volunteering at St. John's Bread & Life for decades.
"The generosity of so especially our friends at Food Bazaar reminds us that, when a community comes together with compassion and purpose, no neighbor should ever face hunger alone," said St. John's Bread & Life Executive Director Sr. Caroline Tweedy, RSM.
Allen Women's Resource Center (AWRC) is an emergency shelter that has operated within the Queens community for over 35 years. AWRC's mission is to provide temporary shelter for adults and children whose lives have been affected by domestic violence. Through individual and group counseling, advocacy, medical and housing assistance, residents are supported to take the necessary steps toward self-determination. AWRC's efforts are directed toward eradicating the emotional trauma caused by domestic violence and enabling victims to realize self-sufficiency through action.
